North Dakota mortgage data

In 2025, lenders originated 7,144 home-purchase mortgages on principal residences in North Dakota, with a median loan of $265,000. One percent of that median loan is $2,650.

That one percent is the expected agent-MLO figure: what a real-estate agent who is also the licensed loan originator on a deal would expect per median loan here at an expected ~100 bps, before any adjustment for the loan or the plan. The median total loan costs the buyer paid, $5,764, is the cost of the whole loan on the Closing Disclosure, not any one party's fee.

Counts of loans each lender filed under HMDA. A lender's place in this table is a count, not a rating or a recommendation.

How these numbers were made

Source: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's public HMDA Snapshot National Loan-Level Dataset for 2025, the loan-level file every covered mortgage lender files under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, as published by the FFIEC. Lender names and kinds come from the same release's transmittal sheet.

Filter: loans with action taken 1 (originated), loan purpose 1 (home purchase), occupancy type 1 (principal residence), lien status 1 (first lien), and not a reverse mortgage, not an open-end line of credit and not for a business or commercial purpose (each coded 2, or 1111 where the filer is exempt from reporting it). Refinances, second homes, investment properties, second liens, reverse mortgages, home equity lines, business-purpose loans and applications that did not close are not counted. Every figure on this page is over those loans in this state, including counties too small for a page of their own.

Rounding: the public file rounds each loan amount to the midpoint of its $10,000 band, so every amount ends in 5,000. Total loan costs are reported by most but not all lenders, and the costs median is over the loans that report them. A county gets a page at 250 or more home-purchase loans in the year, and a smaller county is counted in its state's figures. Lender kind follows the agency each lender files HMDA with, read from the name where that agency supervises more than one kind. A loan came through a broker or other third party when the lender reports the application was not submitted to it directly, which HMDA does not split further.
